Giving birth in Cyprus: GESY, private care and what the state pays you
What GESY covers, what going private costs instead, and the payments you are owed: 22 weeks of maternity allowance and a birth grant up to €2,738.02.
Two separate questions get tangled together here, and it helps to keep them apart. Who pays for the care — GESY or you. And what the state pays you — maternity allowance, paternity allowance and the childbirth grant, which are paid from social insurance and have nothing to do with which hospital you choose.
You can give birth privately and still receive every payment below, provided your contributions qualify.
The care: GESY
GESY covers pregnancy and birth. Once your personal doctor confirms the pregnancy you are referred to an obstetrician or a midwife, and the cover runs through antenatal appointments, scans and tests, the delivery itself, and postnatal care.
It applies in public hospitals and in private hospitals and clinics contracted to GESY — which is the part people miss. Choosing a private clinic does not automatically mean paying privately; it depends on whether that clinic is in the system.
You are in GESY if you contribute: employees, the self-employed, and third-country nationals working here on a permit and paying contributions. Your payslip shows the 2.65%.
The care: going private instead
People pay privately for continuity and choice — the same obstetrician throughout, a particular clinic, a specific approach to the birth, private room, scheduling. Those are real reasons and this article is not going to argue you out of them.
What to establish before deciding, because it decides the cost:
- Is the clinic contracted to GESY? If it is, much of the care may be covered even though it feels private
- Is your obstetrician in GESY? A doctor can be in the system for some activity and not others
- What exactly does the package include — antenatal visits, scans, delivery, epidural, caesarean, the paediatrician, the nights afterwards
- What happens if the birth becomes complicated, and who pays then
Private maternity cover on an insurance policy usually carries a waiting period measured in months, so it must be arranged well before conception, not after. See private insurance in Cyprus.
What the state pays you
This is where families lose money, by not claiming.
Maternity allowance
Paid for 22 weeks, starting between the ninth and second week before the expected birth. Longer in several cases:
| Third or subsequent child | +8 weeks |
| Multiple birth | +4 weeks for each additional child |
| Adoption | 20 weeks |
| Premature baby needing treatment | +1 week for every 21 days of care |
The rate is 72% of the weekly value of your insurance points for the relevant contribution year, and it rises with dependants: 80% with one, 90% with two, 100% with three.
It is not paid if you receive your full salary during the leave. If you are paid a reduced salary, the salary and the allowance together cannot exceed your full wage.
Paternity allowance
Two consecutive weeks at the same 72% rate, taken any time from the week of the birth until two weeks after the mother's maternity leave ends. If the mother dies before or during the birth or during her leave, the father's allowance is extended by the remaining weeks of hers.
Childbirth grant
A lump sum after each birth, rising with the birth order. 2026 amounts:
| First child | €1,095.21 |
| Second child | €1,642.81 |
| Third child | €2,190.42 |
| Fourth and onwards | €2,738.02 |
These are revised every year, which is why you will find several different sets of figures online — including in otherwise reliable published guides that still print an earlier year's amounts as though they were current. Always check the year attached to a figure before relying on it.
It is paid to the mother if either she or the father meets the insurance conditions — so where the mother's own record falls short, the father's contributions can be used, provided the parents are married or he is the recognised father. It is paid for a live birth or a stillbirth after at least 28 weeks of pregnancy.
You must also be legally and permanently resident in the areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus.
There is also a special childbirth grant for unmarried mothers who have lived in Cyprus for the last 12 consecutive months and have not received the corresponding payment from Social Insurance.
Parental leave allowance
Taken after maternity or paternity leave ends, and it now rises with the birth order too, following the same 2024 amendment with effect from 31 March 2025:
| First child | 8 weeks per parent |
| Second child | 10 weeks |
| Third child | 12 weeks |
| Fourth and onwards | 14 weeks |
It can be taken until the child turns 15 — or 21 for a child with a disability, both raised from the previous 8 and 18. There are extra conditions: twelve months of employment within the preceding twenty-four, and six months of continuous employment with the same employer.
The contribution conditions
For maternity allowance, paternity allowance, the childbirth grant and parental leave allowance you need:
- At least 0.50 insurance points of actual insurance, with at least 26 weeks elapsed since your insurance began, and
- At least 0.39 insurance points of actual or assimilated insurance in the relevant contribution year
For the childbirth grant, it is enough that either the mother or her husband meets them.
This is the practical reason to check your record long before the birth — and the reason unpaid contributions matter. See checking your employer is paying.
The deadlines
- Childbirth grant: apply within one year of the birth
- Maternity allowance: the application may be made after the end of the 25th week of pregnancy, and must be submitted within 21 days of the day the benefit is required
That 21-day window is the one that catches people, at exactly the moment nobody is thinking about paperwork.
How to apply
Everything goes through gov.cy. The applications are online services, and in practice that is the only route — the paper form survives only for people who cannot hold an account, such as an applicant with no ARC or Cyprus ID, or a father applying on behalf of a mother who has died.
So the account is the first thing, not the last:
- Get a verified gov.cy account — registering takes minutes, verifying it does not. See gov.cy enrollment. Do this during the pregnancy, not after the birth
- Apply for the maternity allowance after the end of the 25th week, within its 21-day window
- Apply for the birth grant through the government's birth grant service, with the mother's IBAN and the child's birth certificate — so the birth has to be registered first
- Apply for paternity and parental leave allowances the same way
The 1450 helpline
There is a dedicated line for benefits and social insurance questions, including the progress of an application you have already submitted:
| From Cyprus | 1450, free |
| From abroad | +357 22008020, toll-free |
| Hours | Monday to Friday, 8am–5pm |
| Languages | Greek and English |
There is also a live chat on the ministry websites. Worth knowing that the operators can see the social insurance systems, so "where has my application got to" is a question they can actually answer — which beats waiting.
After the birth
The birth must be registered within 15 days, and that is a separate process with its own deadline and documents — see how to register a birth in Cyprus. Russian families have an additional embassy step, covered in the same article.
Common mistakes
Assuming private care means no state payments. The allowances come from social insurance, not from the hospital.
Not checking whether the clinic is contracted to GESY. It changes the bill substantially.
Arranging private maternity cover after conception. Waiting periods make that too late.
Missing the 21-day window for the maternity allowance application.
Not checking the contribution record until the claim. Gaps are fixable in advance and painful afterwards.
What we do
We check the contribution record against the conditions before the birth, so you find out about a gap while there is still time to do something about it, and we tell you which payments you qualify for and roughly what they come to.
Then we handle the applications and their deadlines — the childbirth grant within the year, the maternity allowance inside its 21-day window — and prepare the certificates each one needs. Afterwards we register the birth, and where a Russian Embassy step is involved we prepare that file too, including the translation of the medical birth notification.
Amounts and conditions are set by Social Insurance Services and are revised. The durations and percentages above come from the official social security guide; the birth grant amounts are revised annually — the figures above are the 2026 values — and we confirm the current position with Social Insurance before any claim is filed.
Common questions
Online through gov.cy, which needs a verified account — get that during the pregnancy, not after. The birth grant application needs the mother's IBAN and the child's birth certificate, so the birth must be registered first. The 1450 helpline answers questions and checks application progress, Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm.
