Birth certificates in Cyprus: registering a baby, and the Russian Embassy step
You have 15 days to register a birth in Cyprus. What to bring, what it costs, what late registration adds, and what Russian families need to do afterwards.
A baby born in Cyprus must be registered here, whatever passport the parents hold. If the child is also entitled to another citizenship, that is a second, separate process at that country's embassy — and it cannot start until the Cypriot certificate exists.
Getting the order wrong, or missing the deadline, is what costs people money and weeks.
The 15-day deadline
Every birth in Cyprus must be registered within 15 days.
Miss it and the registration still happens, but with a surcharge:
| When you register | Extra cost |
|---|---|
| Within 15 days | No surcharge |
| After 15 days | €30 |
| After 3 months | €60, plus a sworn declaration with witnesses |
The birth certificate itself is €5.
That sworn-declaration requirement after three months is the part people underestimate: it means arranging witnesses, not just paying more.
Where to register
At any District Administration Office — it does not have to be the district where the baby was born. So a birth in Nicosia can be registered in Larnaca.
What to bring
- Medical certificate of birth (the birth notification form from the hospital or clinic)
- Identity cards or passports of both parents
- The parents' marriage certificate, if they are married
- Residence permits, if the parents are foreign nationals
- If the parents are not married: a joint declaration of recognition of paternity, or a court order
If a document is in a language other than Greek or English, expect to need a certified translation.
If your child is also a Russian citizen
Cypriot registration comes first. Only once you hold the Cypriot birth certificate can the Russian side proceed, at the Russian Embassy in Nicosia.
The usual sequence:
- Register the birth in Cyprus and obtain the certificate
- Apostille the Cypriot certificate, so it is recognised abroad — how apostille works
- Have it translated into Russian, certified as the embassy requires
- Apply at the embassy for the Russian documents — the appointment, the forms and the parents' documents are checked there
Requirements and appointment availability at the embassy change, and they are the one part of this we will not state from memory. Confirm the current list directly with the consular section, or ask us and we will check it with you before you travel to Nicosia.
Common mistakes
Waiting for a passport before registering. The 15 days run from the birth, not from when your paperwork is convenient.
Doing the translation before the apostille. The apostille goes on the Cypriot certificate; translating first usually means paying twice.
Assuming the hospital registers the birth. It issues the medical certificate. Registering is the parents' job.
Registering late because the parents are not married. The joint declaration of paternity can be made at registration — being unmarried is not a reason to delay past 15 days.
Leaving the embassy step for later. Later usually means the child cannot travel on the passport you expected, at the moment you need to travel.
What we do
We register births at the District Administration, obtain the certificate, arrange apostille and certified translation, and prepare the file for the Russian Embassy — including checking the current requirements before you make the trip to Nicosia. If you are recovering from a birth, this is exactly the kind of errand worth handing over.
