Cyprus ID cards and passports: who can get one, what it costs, how long it takes
The Cypriot ID card is for citizens only — residents need a different card. Fees, validity, the biometrics appointment, and how the two-day accelerated passport actually works.
First, the thing that sends people to the wrong queue
The Cypriot identity card is issued to Cypriot citizens only. If you are a foreign national living here, there is no Cypriot ID card for you to renew — the card you hold is a residence document, and it renews through a completely different process at the Migration Department. That is covered in residence permits in Cyprus.
People search for "Cyprus ID renewal", arrive at the Civil Registry, and are sent away. If you are not a citizen, start with the residence permit article instead. The rest of this page is for citizens, and for the passport — which follows the same shape for everyone entitled to one.
The ID card
Holding one is compulsory from age 12. The current card is biometric.

The process is two steps, and the second one cannot be skipped or delegated:
- Apply online through gov.cy — which needs a verified account
- Attend in person at a Citizen Service Centre for biometrics: photograph, fingerprints and signature
Take the printed application form and your existing identity document to the appointment. Fingerprints are deleted within 48 hours of the card being issued.
The passport
Same two-step shape: apply, then attend for biometrics. Children under 12 do not give fingerprints or a signature.

Adult passports are valid 10 years, minors' 5 years.
Normal processing is around 15 working days. The accelerated route is reported to produce the passport in about two days — but it is submitted only at the Civil Registry offices in Nicosia, not at your district office and not at a Citizen Service Centre. If you are in Larnaca and you need a passport this week, that means a trip to Nicosia, and it is worth confirming same-week availability before you drive up.
What you need before you start
- A verified gov.cy account. This is the step that quietly blocks people: registering takes minutes, but identifying the account requires eBanking, a video call or an in-person appointment
- Your existing ID card or passport
- The completed application form, printed
- The fee, paid as part of the online application
Where this fits with everything else
A passport is the document other processes wait on. If you are registering a birth, a marriage or a residence application, the passport is usually the long pole — start it first, not last.
If the passport is going to be used abroad, it may also need an apostille and a certified translation. Those are separate steps with their own timelines.
Common mistakes
Assuming a residence card is a Cypriot ID. They are different documents from different departments. A foreign national cannot renew a Cypriot ID card.
Leaving the gov.cy account until the day you apply. Identifying an account can take a week if you need an appointment.
Booking the accelerated passport locally. It is Nicosia only.
Letting a passport expire before a residence renewal. A permit tied to an expired passport creates problems that take longer to fix than the renewal itself would have.
Expecting someone else to attend biometrics for you. Nobody can. The law requires you in person.

We cannot issue government documents or give biometrics on your behalf, and anyone who says otherwise is not being straight with you.
